Michigan schools just might see their sex-ed programs revamped to include more “medically accurate” teachings, that tout “factual information” at its core.
On June 25, 2009 Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith sponsored a bill to revise the requirements for Michigan public school sex-ed programs, and today that bill passed the house.

Sadly, progressive bills such as this one that would do much to educate young people about the possible consequences of unprotected sex are labeled as part of the “homosexual agenda,” or are tagged as “invasive” and disrespectful to the rights of parents who may wish to teach their children no other alternative method besides abstinence.
Sadly, in the year 2010, when new HIV/AIDS cases occur every day, and more and more of our young adults are contracting STDs or finding themselves within the throws of an unwanted/unplanned pregnancy, the abstinence super-heroes are still clinging to this last vestige of European, Victorian Era ethics.
However, many voters and elected officials alike, when confronted with rising healthcare costs, taxes, and social services costs are realizing that abstinence ain’t kickin’ it … we gotta start talking to kids about condoms, birth control, STDs, and what an unwanted/unplanned pregnancy could do to their life.
It’s not about an agenda, it’s about cold, hard facts. More kids are having sex, younger; and unfortunately, the number of parents having realistic, open conversations with their children about sex is not increasing to confront the statistics.
Let’s sit back and watch the Senate digest this one. I’m sure they’ll flub it up, much like they’ve flubbed up everything else.
