Throwback Jamz …

04 Sep

One of my favorite things about doing drag is deciding what music I am going to perform to, as well as which outfits I’ll be wearing with each song.

I’ve done a number of songs and a number of different outfits (some far more outrageous than others).

In the last month, I’ve done four shows including the hand down of my title as Mr. PowerDiva, yet it rarely gets to be boring or tiresome … in fact, when a long period of time goes by when I haven’t performed, I often miss it …

Anyway, as I am preparing for my show tomorrow night at Rumors, I wanted to share this little something, something with you, so you can take a trip down memory lane with me ;)

Do you have a favorite song from your youth that just brings a smile to your face everytime you hear it?

Stuff …

03 Sep

Nothing much has been going on lately.

Been doing some light writing, and of course some good reading.

Just finished a book (real quick read) called, Buddha For Beginners. If you’re into checking out other religions and are looking for a fun book that takes some pretty in-depth concepts and breaks them down to a simpler level, you should check this one out.

I’ll be honest and say that it didn’t do anything for my writer’s block (which has been haunting me off and on for years now), however it did prompt an absolutely amazing discussion regarding Aryans … not those Aryans, ding-bat (as in the falsified “master race” Aryan concoction the Germans self-affiliated with) … the real Aryans … the very war-like Indo-Iranian people that populated the Southwest region of Asia (today what is India, anything ending in “-stan” and large parts of the Middle East). Not much time is given to TRULY study REAL Aryans, however if you call yourself a practitioner of any organized religion (or just a fan of studying them), get yourself some good resources and a large map and really dive into the history of things … you won’t be sorry! :D

Got a few other exciting things going on in life … but those things are best saved for later discussions when we have more time and more coffee. For right now, it’s off to bed to enjoy this little storm we’re having!

Cee-Lo.

25 Aug

Y’all know I love me some Cee-Lo! As soon as I heard about his new video going viral, I had to check it out, and then spread the word!

Can’t wait until this next album comes out. You know it’s gonna be sheer art. If he could bottle music and sell it, I swear to goodness it would sell like absinthe ;)

it’s been a while.

24 Aug

i am so glad to be home.

it is amazing how the shortest journey came seem like the longest ever taken at times!

i am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, a philosophy that has helped me survive even the most painful of challenges throughout my life.

upon returning home, i was rewarded with the knowledge that my oldest step-daughter is pregnant, the youngest step-daughter is on track for college in the Fall, and that my home had definitely weathered better days (it may be time relocate and more seriously consider purchasing a home as opposed to renting one).

life is odd.

i haven’t been able to write in what feels like forever, however i have taken a random interest in creating journals (among other artistic endeavors). hopefully something closely resembling my muse arises from this latest adventure.

on another note, isn’t it strange, the comings and goings of people in our lives … ?

Headed off into the wilderness …

08 Jun

… but alas … this is one of the last entries I’ll be posting for a while …

I’m headed off into the great, wild Alabama wilderness for the summer …

Perfect.

A real vacation destination … but, at least it’ll be a good, long, hard challenge along the way …

Video Feature: “How I Got Over” — The Roots

18 Apr

The Roots “How I Got Over” from Okayplayer on Vimeo.

My love affair with The Roots goes way back to my own roots, actually. Young, lost, hopeful poet trying to figure out the ins and outs of these streets. I kept Black Thoughts’ words close to my heart while navigating job after job and space after space trying to make ends meet, just wanting to make it from Point A to Point B …

Check this track out, and get ready for the upcoming album, ’cause you know it’s gonna be another smash hit chock fulla’ truth!

Peace,

dante.

Elvis has landed.

02 Apr

Okay.

Not quite.

I’m not quite Elvis … in fact, I’m nowhere near Elvis … but I have landed myself in Anchorage, Alaska.

Now, I’ve never been to Alaska, and in all honesty, in spite of the gag reflex Sarah Palin solicits from the depths of my intestines, I have few pre-conceived notions of the state.

I assumed, thanks to countless hours of Animal Planet, that the state would be freezing at this time of year. It is miles north of the equator, and it is early April. Heck, I’m still expecting a late frost in my own home state of Michigan. However, I was pleasantly surprised to note upon landing that although it was a little chilly, I definitely did not have the urge to purchase and don a parka.

Unfortunately, I won’t have a ton of time to hang out with the locals and really take in some of the down-home flavor, however I will be sure to take and post plenty of pictures for our mutual enjoyment.

Also, I’d like to note that flying into Alaska is not for the faint of heart. The turbulence is enough to cause a heart attack, and as if that weren’t enough — when I looked out the window there was nothing but snowy, mountainy rock formations that melted into the distant, inky blackness … in other words, if the plane were to go down, there would be nowhere to go and nothing to do except sit, wait, and freeze.

Tomorrow, I fly out to Juneau, which is my final destination. I’ll be performing tomorrow night at the University of Alaska – Juneau, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t mega-excited!

Gonna go get my beauty rest!

Michigan’s House passes Comprehensive Sex Ed Bill, but good luck with the Senate

24 Mar

Michigan schools just might see their sex-ed programs revamped to include more “medically accurate” teachings, that tout “factual information” at its core.

On June 25, 2009 Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith sponsored a bill to revise the requirements for Michigan public school sex-ed programs, and today that bill passed the house.

READ A SUMMARY OF THE BILL (2009)

Sadly, progressive bills such as this one that would do much to educate young people about the possible consequences of unprotected sex are labeled as part of the “homosexual agenda,” or are tagged as “invasive” and disrespectful to the rights of parents who may wish to teach their children no other alternative method besides abstinence.

Sadly, in the year 2010, when new HIV/AIDS cases occur every day, and more and more of our young adults are contracting STDs or finding themselves within the throws of an unwanted/unplanned pregnancy, the abstinence super-heroes are still clinging to this last vestige of European, Victorian Era ethics.

However, many voters and elected officials alike, when confronted with rising healthcare costs, taxes, and social services costs are realizing that abstinence ain’t kickin’ it … we gotta start talking to kids about condoms, birth control, STDs, and what an unwanted/unplanned pregnancy could do to their life.

It’s not about an agenda, it’s about cold, hard facts. More kids are having sex, younger; and unfortunately, the number of parents having realistic, open conversations with their children about sex is not increasing to confront the statistics.

Let’s sit back and watch the Senate digest this one. I’m sure they’ll flub it up, much like they’ve flubbed up everything else.

Holy Smokes!? Democrats In West Michigan!?

23 Mar

Recently, I’ve begun doing some volunteer work with an organization here in Michigan called the Michigan Democratic LGBTQIA Caucus (MDLC).

The organization has representation in several of the 15 districts in Michigan and is surprisingly diverse. Unfortunately, when we think of politics and political movements, gender, racial, and ethnic minorities don’t typically have a face and/or high rate of representation.

I was relieved to discover that the MDLC did not fit that bill. There are both heterosexual and homosexual men and women, racial and ethnic minorities, as well as transgender members.

Compared to several other groups within West Michigan, this is the exception and most certainly not the norm.

At any rate, during my volunteer work with this organization, I have found not one, but two progressive Democrat candidates in the West Michigan area who are running for office.

I’ve posted a few videos here for your viewing pleasure:

Fred Johnson — Democratic Candidate for Michigan’s 2nd Congressional District

Pat Miles — Democratic Candidate for Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District

Although we have yet to make contact with Candidate Pat Miles regarding his stance on social reform, we were able to contact Candidate Fred Johnson, who responded quickly and directly to the questions of MDLC Co-Chair Adam Taylor. Please read Mr. Johnson’s letter here: LETTER TO ADAM TAYLOR
